Who Here IS Going to Be the Next…

Maybe this girl.  Hey, it’s worth a try.  Idol auditions for Charlotte, NC have been announced and in the ten years that I have been tentatively following the progress of others who have gone before me, I have slowly started to figure out the audition process.

Best Idol Auditions of Season 11

Worst Idol Auditions of Season 11

  1. There will be thousands upon thousands of hopefuls, more talented, better looking, and with more shining personalities and back stories that I will just not be able to top.  I am okay with that.  I am going to be me.  Original, personable, and somewhat talented.  But I have some drive, now.  But so does everyone else…which brings me to…
  2. Once I have made it past registration and actually getting in to the audition…I am lining up before 6 AM…I am going to have to be the 100% of me that I am.  Bright, cheerful, confident the day of auditions means: sleep, tea, and warmed up.
  3. I have been told that hopefuls need to prepare three songs.  Once you have those three songs…rehearse, rehearse, rehearse some more.  Record yourself, show off for your friends and family (and please, for the love of God, make sure they’re brutal), or not if you want to get put on the show for a bad audition.  Sometimes the rotten tomatoes get picked over the brilliant bouquets.
  4. Dress for success.  Be stylish and well groomed.  Don’t go in looking like you’re going to a business meeting, but if you’re dressed like a hooker, you’re not getting in unless you’re horrible and even that’s a toss up.
  5. Sing something that is NOT overdone.  When I did my Disney Idol audition, the lady in the room was so excited I didn’t sing Adele.  DO NOT SING ADELE…DO NOT SING GOTYE…DO NOT SING F.U.N…OR MICHAEL JACKSON.  If it is out of this world popular AKA playing on the radio, do not sing it.  Everyone else and their mom will be singing it, too.
  6. Sing something you’re good at.  This goes with all my auditions.  My worst auditions are the songs where I try to impress the directors/judges and I just end up sounding terrible.  Don’t get too far out of your element.  Just be you.
  7. Pick your biggest influences in music, life, and run with it.  They are not just auditioning your voice but your personality.  They want someone who is marketable.  Someone who can sell not only albums but cars, sodas, dolls, you name it.  Welcome to commercialism. Time to shine!
  8. Don’t say thank you if they shoot you down.  This is a tip from Simon himself.  Stick up for yourself, ask what can I do better for next time?  Or do I need to keep my dayjob for reals?
  9. Smile, breathe, and enjoy it.  Take it easy.  Don’t warm up too much, and good luck.  Chances are we won’t get through the first round anyways, and if we make it to the second, then half of us will be gone before the third round, and then maybe, you or I will be one of the 100 out of nearly 100,000 that auditioned to go to Hollywood.

Here’s the link to the last time I auditioned for “Idol.”  I didn’t make it through to the second round but, hey, it was a ton of fun and a great memory. Anyone else tried or is trying out for “American’s greatest talent show?” Have any more tips for me?  I would love to hear them!
